Arctic Toast

In April 2006 Hamilton & Burlington area business men Peter Turkstra, Steve Stipsits, Fred Losani, Scott Shawyer and Paul Hubner joined 2 other adventurers and skied to the North Pole to raise as much money as possible for local kids charities. This ambitious expedition took the team of adventurers - seven in all - to one of the most inhospitable places on Earth. It was a 110 km journey across ice and snow in round-the-clock daylight and -30 to -50 degree weather. The team successfully reached GPS 89.999 degrees N at approximately 3:25 p.m. on Tuesday, April 19, 2006. Despite numerous pressure ridges and leads (open water), as well as fast-moving drifting ice, they arrived at the geographic North Pole as scheduled and in good health. Peter Turkstra, a Steam Whistle fan, took along a bottle of Steam Whistle Pilsner to crack open and toast when they reached the Pole. He loved the beer and thought it would be great way to celebrate their achievement. 'To the Top of the World Charity' expedition met their goal of raising $500,000 to assist children and families in the Hamilton and surrounding areas. All expenses were paid by the team members to ensure all funds raised went directly to their respective charities.
